1. The Desire for Power

When we talk about control, we’re really talking about power. For some men, having power means being in control. This isn’t about just “having the upper hand”; it’s deeper. Control becomes a way to feel important, strong, even “better.”

Picture a man who feels small or insecure.

Maybe life has him feeling out of place or like he’s not “winning.” Controlling someone else — especially in a relationship — can give him a sense of winning. It’s like he can say, “Look, here’s where I’m the boss.”

A buddy of mine once said, “In relationships, I need to feel like I’m steering the ship.”

He admitted it was because, in other parts of his life, he didn’t feel that control. It was like he needed someone to lead so he could feel better about himself.
