What reading “Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts” taught Me about Relationships

Starting a marriage is a big deal. But staying happily married? That’s a whole other story. After reading Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts by Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott, I found practical advice on building a lasting relationship.

Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts

Here’s what I got from it.

1. Communication is Your Lifeline

Early on, the book talks about how to talk to each other. Sounds simple, right?

But it goes beyond just talking — it’s about understanding.

Dr. Les Parrott says, “Most people don’t listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.”

And honestly, that hit home. I realized I had to stop listening just to respond. Instead, it’s all about actually hearing what my partner feels.

2. The Right Expectations

This one’s huge.

So many couples enter marriage with unrealistic expectations.

They think their partner will “complete” them.

But the book challenges this.

It teaches that no one person can fill all your needs.
