Marriage Counseling vs. Couples Therapy: Which One Works for You?
Marriage counseling vs. couples therapy. Ever thought they were the same thing? You’re not alone.
When I first looked into relationship help, they felt like fancy terms for talking to someone who’d tell me what I already knew.
But once I got into it, I realized there’s a clear difference between the two — and why it matters.
What’s the Difference?
Let’s break it down in simple terms.
Think of marriage counseling as focused on solving current issues — communication problems, trust, daily arguments, you name it.
It’s about finding ways to deal with specific problems popping up in a marriage.
On the other hand, couples therapy goes deeper.
This is where you get into your individual histories, how each of you grew up, your family’s way of handling emotions. It’s more like figuring out why you act the way you do with your partner.
Marriage counseling is about fixing; couples therapy is about understanding.
Why I Chose to Try Both
Now, I’m not saying everyone needs both.
